Exhaust Fan

An exhaust fan is a type of ventilation system designed to extract air from the environment, as opposed to blower fans that push air into a space. In greenhouses, these fans pull out moist and warm air—either from evaporative pad systems or misting systems—which not only refreshes the internal atmosphere but also helps to cool the environment effectively. The air suction is powered by high-performance motors that operate either through air pressure mechanisms (gravity/weighted dampers) or via centrifugal force (clutch-based dampers), which control the automatic opening of the dampers.

The key difference between these two fan types lies in the damper mechanism:

In gravity damper fans, the air pressure created by the fan’s airflow opens the dampers.

In clutch-based fans, a clutch mechanism activates the damper system immediately upon startup, ensuring faster and more reliable operation.

Exhaust fans can be used throughout the year. In winter, they are primarily intended to circulate small volumes of air, helping maintain fresh air without causing significant heat loss. In summer, greenhouse fans must have sufficient capacity to exchange large volumes of air continuously, ensuring optimal ventilation during hot weather.

These fans are typically installed on the end wall of the greenhouse. Air enters the structure through motorized vents and is drawn outward by the exhaust fans, promoting effective airflow and environmental control.

Advantages of Exhaust Fans:

  • Helps regulate humidity levels throughout the greenhouse
  • Ensures uniform air circulation among the plants
  • Promotes even distribution of optimal temperature
  • Reduces dust levels and airborne pest and disease threats
  • Distributes essential gases evenly across the growing area
  • Facilitates continuous air exchange between inside and outside environments
  • Supplies sufficient CO₂ for plant photosynthesis
  • Creates favorable conditions for pollen movement and pollination
